The purpose of the Basic Science WG

Researchers doing basic cardiovascular research as well as clinicians are invited to attend the meetings held by the Basic Science WP. The meetings are a forum where researchers can meet each other. The meetings also try to enhance collaboration between research groups and inform its members about new, interesting findings in basic cardiovascular research.

One purpose is also create opportunities for international collaboration.

The main purpose of Basic Science WP is to increase the awareness of basic cardiovascular science and its advances among cardiologists and to present interesting basic science findings in the meetings held by Finnish Cardiology Society.

Forms of activity

The Basic Science WP meets twice a year during the annual and the autumn meeting of the Finnish Cardiology Society. The nucleus of the WP has additional meetings to plan future activities.

In order to inform about current research programs and to enhance collaboration between research groups, additional meetings are also planned. These are proposed to take place during various events organized by the Finnish Cardiology Society. In these meeting research groups from different cities could introduce themselves and their research interests. All basic research currently requires multidisciplinary approach and knowledge and, thus, speakers from various fields of basic research will be invited to future meetings to enhance better and more intense collaboration between researches with different backgrounds.

Members of the Basic Science WP are encouraged to participate in activities organized by international organizations e.g. ESC to get international collaboration.

The Basic Science WP organized annually sessions during meeting held by the Finnish Cardiology Society. Those sessions cover topics with also clinical relevance. Speakers from abroad are also invited.

Journals dealing with basic cardiovascular research

Journals with publications about top level cardiovascular basic research include Circulation, Circulation research, European Heart Journal, J Mol Cell Cardiol, and P Natl Acad Sci. More specific methodological articles can be found e.g. in Echocardiography. Main journals with molecular genetics are e.g. American Journal of Human Genetics and Nature Genetics.

Meetings

Meetings organized by the European College of Cardiology include sessions dealing with basic research. Meeting by European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS) focus mainly on atherosclerosis and lipid research. The European Cardiovascular Development Conference organizes meetings about congenital cardiac diseases. The meetings organized by the European Council for Cardiovascular Research has annual meetings with quite broad spectrum on basic research.
